India’s Double Epidemic: COVID-19 Continues Alongside Mucormycosis Surge

Recent developments have forced us to look at other ways people can be infected with some kind of fancy, hard-to-pronounce ailment. We had to dig a little to find out if there are any more such diseases caused by fungi or bacteria, and it went somewhere that I would like to share. While taking into consideration that there are many such diseases which may attack the lower immunity folks out there, though the chances are very rare of any occurrence of such disease, let alone they turning into an epidemic. There are innumerable possibilities to get infected in our daily life during the time of the pandemic, but as the intellectuals have it, an individual mustn’t create panic among the people, which can later be termed as mass hysteria.

Having said that, there are a few bacteria that came up through research, and after a long reading of many research documents, understanding them and completely having been assured with the reading, we share the findings.

Tough we aren’t some kinds of experts in virology or any of the medical fields, something in our common sense and logic says that the epidemic wont just end here and there was more to it after the re-occurrence of Mucormycosis, and during the long reading sessions it was found that all the possibilities of the bacterium and fungi infections have a minor chance of infecting many post COVID patients with co-morbidities or say underlying medical conditions. While most of them are not very lethal, all of them have a mortality rate less than 5% which means all of them are treatable a 100%, but what is of more concern is that there are chances of these infections manifesting in real life. As the doctors have always been saying this and reiterating it through all times of the COVID-19 crisis, “prevention is better than Cure,” and so much so in this case, precautions are much better even than prevention.

Most of the diseases caused by bacteria and or fungi are related to unhygienic or hasty practices of hospital staff, tough these are almost taken for granted in regular times, we are under no regular circumstances and hence there is a huge chance that the tired nurse/doctor may have not paid enough attention on the traditional hygienic practices. Even the smallest negligence can make a person infected with mucormycosis or any new bacteria, for instance, the most common among patients, which occurred in medical literature are Paracoccus, Paracoccus tough, and rare, and low-occurring, it can prove to be a real difficult thing to deal with. Especially in people who have recently gone through a heart transplant and are on immune suppressants (when these keywords are used, it’s important to note that diabetics should also be considered).

The point here is that there are many such bacteria which cause very lethal infections if not treated well (though individually in normal times they never occur), the only way to prevent these is to have a checklist during the epidemic. The book “the checklist manifesto by Atul Gawande” is this extremely useful book which has anecdotal but logical incidents which prove that having a check list in these dire times can make things easier in such tough times.

All the ailments that are happening post covid can be classified under opportunistic bacterial infection, meaning they wait for the conditions to be more conducive to them and then they attack and infest the patient; most of the time, these are avoidable. We do not say that the healthcare workers are being nonchalant while performing their duties, due to the nature of their work and handling extreme pressure in their duties, they may neglect a few things, and these small things can be lethal in many cases.

A word to every health care worker

Doesn’t matter if you are a ward boy, nurse or doctor, just make sure that the hygiene is not compromised, we understand that you are under a lot of stress and there are a lot of mistakes happening in these dire times, just make a checklist of things to be cleaned and replaced once a bed is cleared and emptied. By doing this one small thing right, many lives can be saved.

It's high time we use this method; it’s simple, cheap, and life-saving.
