Can India Reshape Its Meat Industry with Lab-Grown and Plant-Based Alternatives?

The meat industry globally is a massive sector in terms of capital and employment. The consumption of meat, whether in India or worldwide, has been a matter of concern for many, not because of its consumption per se, but the methods adopted for breeding and processing animals for meat. It is a well-known fact that animals like pigs, cows, chickens, and goats are subjected to inhumane conditions during their breeding.

One cannot ignore the health concerns related to excessive meat consumption and, more importantly, the disease-transmitting potential that animals carry. Studies suggest that around 70% of viruses affecting humans originate from animals. COVID-19 is also believed to have jumped from animals to humans in the Wuhan wet market.

Meat processing plants were shut during the COVID-19 outbreak due to contamination and unsafe practices. Countries like the USA witnessed thousands of such facilities being closed and employees infected. The use of antibiotics in animal feed is another issue. It leads to antibiotic resistance in humans and possible long-term complications.

What needs to be asked is: Are we ready to reshape this industry?

Lab-grown meat, also known as “cultured meat,” is a possible solution to most of these problems. It is produced by harvesting muscle cells from a live animal and growing them in a nutrient-rich medium in controlled environments. This approach minimizes the need for mass slaughter and also decreases the possibility of zoonotic diseases.

Apart from lab-grown meat, plant-based meat is another growing sector. Startups like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are making products that mimic real meat in taste and texture. In India, companies like GoodDot and Blue Tribe Foods are trying to break into this market as well.

But these developments face several challenges:

  1. Public Acceptance – Many consumers still consider plant-based or lab meat “unnatural.”
  2. Religious and Cultural Resistance – Especially in India, where food is closely tied to religious identities.
  3. Cost of Production – Lab-grown meat is still expensive compared to conventional meat.
  4. Government Regulation – The absence of clear guidelines and food laws around cultured meat.

The lab-grown meat industry is still at a nascent stage. Its scalability, affordability, taste, and public trust are yet to be fully tested. What is sure, however, is the growing pressure on meat industries to either adapt or perish. The conventional meat industry is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases, excessive water consumption, deforestation, and animal cruelty. Climate change activists and vegan advocates have long argued for reducing meat consumption for the sake of the planet.

A transition toward a more sustainable food system will have to include the reshaping of this industry. But how ready are we for it?

There are also questions about how governments will react. Will lab-grown meat be taxed as processed food? Will it be subsidized? Will traditional meat lobbies resist it? These are important issues because unless the policy environment is receptive, even the best technologies will fail to scale.

Another important issue is labelling. Should plant-based meat be allowed to use terms like “chicken,” “mutton,” or “burger”? Traditional meat producers argue that using such terms misleads consumers. In 2020, the European Union proposed a ban on using meat-related terms for plant-based alternatives, which was later defeated after public backlash.

Indian regulations are still evolving. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is yet to release comprehensive guidelines on plant-based and lab-grown meat. Without this, companies are operating in a grey zone, which can become problematic both legally and ethically.

Cultural resistance is another major hurdle in India. The country has a deep-rooted food culture linked to caste, religion, and regional identity. While urban youth might show enthusiasm, acceptance among middle-aged and rural populations will be difficult. Additionally, the idea of lab-grown meat evokes suspicion in a society where food purity is still culturally sacred.

Yet, despite all this, there is a silent movement growing. Rising awareness about climate change, increased exposure to global food trends, celebrity endorsements, and the influence of social media are making younger generations more curious and accepting of these alternatives.

If governments and private players work together, a clean meat revolution could very well be the future. It will not only reduce the environmental burden but also prevent the next pandemic.

It is high time we ask ourselves:
Are we consumers ready to shift?
Are policymakers prepared to adapt?
And are we morally and ethically awake to the realities of our plate?
